Keep Kids Learning with Daniel Tiger!

School’s out. It’s getting hot out. And yet, summer is still a time of learning. For little ones, summer is filled with teachable moments and opportunities to read aloud. For school-aged ones, summer can be a dangerous slide that erodes knowledge build over the school year. Or, summer can be a time to make gains in knowledge, stimulate imaginations, and build enthusiasm for learning by reading and reading out loud.

This year, we’re thrilled to collaborate with our lead partners: Destiny USA, NY’s 529 College Savings Program, the Syracuse Chiefs, and WCNY, about the importance of summer learning at an upcoming Tykes Tuesday on July 10th from 12 noon to 2pm in the Canyon Area at Destiny USA. Join us for wonderful family fun, with free books, face painting, arts & crafts and beach-themed activities with a growing list of community partners and sponsors along with a special guest appearance by the beloved PBS character, Daniel Tiger! New Adult Literacy Awareness Campaign Launched

The Adult Education Roundtable (AER), a collaborative group of local Adult Literacy/Adult Education providers and supporters in Onondaga County, has joined forces to raise public awareness of the adult literacy needs in our community. Thanks to a grant from the Rotary Club of Syracuse, which was matched by the Central New York Community Foundation, this collective awareness campaign was launched this month.

Prior grant investments by the Community Foundation have also enabled the AER to develop a referral website – www.cnylearns.org. Those interested in supporting, volunteering, or learning more about services offered, can get a quick start by visiting the website or calling 1-866-705-READ to explore options. Learn more »

Adult Students Overcome Many Obstacles to Graduate

Letter to the Editor by Kathryn Lent, Coordinator, Adult and Continuing Education, Syracuse City School District:

The month of June is filled with local high school graduations, but did you know there are also adult education graduations? Some of our students have persevered for years to earn their diplomas. They are positive role models for their families and our community and are now enrolled in local colleges, have obtained new and better employment, or entered a vocational training program. We support our students no matter what their issues or challenges.
