Literacy Coalition Celebrates International Literacy Day

Onondaga County Executive
Joanne
M. Mahoney |
On September 8th, the Literacy Coalition of Onondaga County celebrated
International Literacy Day to raise awareness of illiteracy worldwide
and in our own community with a “Take 5 to Read” event, co-hosted with
the Northside Collaboratory.
We were pleased to have the participation
of Onondaga County Executive Joanne M.
Mahoney, our celebrity reader, who read
aloud from this year’s CNY Reads book selection: “March” by Geraldine
Brooks. Adult students from the “Green Train” construction training
program at the Northside Collaboratory also participated.
This year’s observance focused on
the empowering role of literacy. Literacy
gives people tools with which to improve their livelihoods, participate
in community decision-making, gain access to information about health
care and much more. Above all, it enables individuals to realize their
rights as citizens and human beings.
Thank you to all our Literacy Coalition of Onondaga County leadership
partners!
